USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) is a Global System for Mobile(GSM) communication technology that is used to send text between a mobile phone and an application program in the network. Applications may include prepaid roaming or mobile chatting.
USSD is similar to Short Messaging Service (SMS), but,unlike SMS, USSD transactions occur during the session only. With SMS, message can be sent to a mobile phone and stored for several days if the phone is not activated or within range.
The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) supports USSD. USSD is defined in the GSM standard documents GSM 02.90 and GSM 03.90.

Imagine, recharging your prepaid mobile account, making a few phone calls, and getting money back into your account! This is set to become a reality, as IDEA Cellular - the pan-India mobile operator and the leader in Kerala, has introduced a unique 'Money Back' concept for nearly 56 lakh mobile subscribers in the state.

The 'Money Back' offer is a first-of-its-kind product in Kerala, designed to reward prepaid mobile subscribers on the Idea network. Every Idea subscriber who makes phone calls or sends SMS during the day is eligible for Money Back. Depending on the usage, subscribers can avail upto 50% of the used talktime value credited back into the account. Idea subscribers can call on the Toll Free number '5001' to know their best deals on the Money Back offer.

Money Back offer is being extended to all Idea prepaid subscribers who use their number for making phone calls and sending SMS, by default, without any separate recharge or activation requirement. The money will be immediately credited into the account, as the user crosses the usage limit set for him/ her, on a daily basis.
